Did You Hit A Pot Hole And Your Vehicle Is Handling Poorly And Your Windshield Cracked? What To Know

by Josh Walters

If you drove into a large pot hole or over something that jolted your vehicle, and you now have some steering issues and a flawed or cracked windshield, you want to get the vehicle looked at. Even if you don't see a lot of damage on the outside of the car, there could be internal problems to worry about. Here are a few things you'll want to consider doing right away, to make sure that the vehicle is safe to drive.

Get a Mechanical Inspection

Have a mechanical inspection completed to make sure that there isn't something wrong inside the car, even if you can't see any damage when you lift up the hood. Even if the alignment was disrupted, it could cause the tires to wear unevenly, along with causing steering problems and complications over time. Have the tires rotated and balanced after the hit, and consider all other recommendations made by the mechanics.

Repair the Windshield

You can't drive around with a cracked windshield, and you can be cited in many states and then have to pay a ticket. Even if you only have a small chip, this can spread quickly when you hit a bump, or if the temperatures drop. The cracks can also cause vision issues and impairments when driving, reflecting glares or preventing you from seeing signs and pedestrians or other vehicles.

If there is significant damage throughout the windshield it may be time to replace it. If there is only a small amount of damage, like a chip, then auto glass repair professionals may be able to repair it, and then the chip won't spread and turn into a spider web crack. Get estimates for both options to see what will be the most affordable for your budget, and take into consideration the value of the car.

If you drove over something or into something, and you can feel that your car isn't handling the same, you want to make sure there is no major damage that could cause you to lose control in the future. You also can't ignore window flaws that may prohibit you from driving safely. Get both of these concerns assessed and repaired before you head back out on the road. If you don't have time to get the windshield fixed at the service center, there are some windshield repair companies that will come to you to do the work you need completed.
